Designing Human-scaled Healthcare
There is a structural tension between the industrialization of healthcare and the human scale of care that is essential to health and well-being. Many patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers in our healthcare systems feel dehumanized as the net effect of their interactions with it. In his talk, Jeremy will discuss the role and value of design in healthcare organizations as one approach to creating a more human-scaled healthcare system for every person that touches it. The human-centered design process emphasizes a deep understanding of people’s needs and facilitates their meaningful participation through generative research and co-design activities. In its methodology and outputs, design has the potential to reorient the terms of how patients, caregivers, and providers experience healthcare, as well as help them reimagine the healthcare for the future.
ABOUT JEREMY BEAUDRY
Jeremy Beaudry is Lead Healthcare Experience Designer at hiCOlab, a design and innovation lab embedded in The University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. Previously, he was a professor of design and director of the Industrial Design and Design for Social Impact masters programs at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. His research and design practice focus on creating collaborative tools and methods with organizations, communities, and leaders in the service of systems-wide change and innovation efforts. He publishes, publicly presents, and leads workshops on the power of participatory design to change organizations and systems from the inside out. After helping a close family member navigate the complexity of healthcare during a serious illness, he was drawn into that world as a place to use his experience and skills as a designer to create more humane healthcare systems. Jeremy occasionally writes about design, healthcare, and social impact here.
