What's a 'Data Artist'?
There's a lot of buzz these days about data science and machine learning... but how do we make sense of these abstract ideas? Data visualization artist Jane Adams shares some of her solutions for creating images of 'big data' at the University of Vermont Complex Systems Center, and what that work has meant for her as an artist.
ABOUT JANE ADAMS
Jane Adams is a lifelong learner, curious about synergies between arts and sciences. She is a graduate of Champlain College, with a BFA in graphic design and digital media, and an MFA in emergent media. As the University of Vermont Complex Systems Center's data visualization artist in residence, Ms. Adams works alongside researchers to make the complex comprehensible through engaging, interactive charts and graphs. Jane is a community organizer with Vermont Women in Machine Learning and Data Science (VT WiMLDS); an investigator with the Burlington Arts Alliance, which seeks equity and transparency in public art funding; and a member of the Illumination Collective, bringing interactive glow and shadowplay to public spaces with site-specific installations. In her spare time, she translates music into colorful data paintings; tinkers with aquaponic robots; explores how to visualize data in VR; does rock climbing and doodles.
