Seven years into his professional career as a graphic designer Michael came across a Charles Eames Diagram that changed his view about the practice of design. It was a defining moment that influenced his co-founding of Tricycle, a sustainable design company, and that eventually led him to join global design consultancy, IDEO. Michael will share this journey into design thinking with highlights from both his personal and IDEO portfolios.

Michael Hendrix
Michael Hendrix is a Location Director and Associate Partner at IDEO in Boston. In addition to leading the studio he contributes creative direction and brand strategy on projects ranging from counter-culture apparel to OTC drugs to luxury home goods. Michael believes that the best brands are built by a system of networked experiences, from strategic planning, to the manufacturing floor, to consumer interactions.

An accomplished communication designer, he has been awarded by all of the major American graphic design associations and publications including the One Show, Type Directors Club, Print, How, and Communication Arts. He is also an AIGA Fellow, an honor acknowledging designers who have made a significant contribution to raising the standards of excellence in the practice and conduct of graphic design within their local or regional design community and AIGA chapter.

Prior to IDEO, he served for six years as Chief Brand Officer and Creative Director of Tricycle, Inc., a sustainable design company he co-founded to reduce petroleum use and landfill waste in the commercial flooring industry. Under his direction Tricycle received multiple recognitions for sustainable design and thought leadership from Business Week, the British House of Commons, Green Good Design and the INDEX: Awards, as well as the professional design associations of AIGA, IIDA, AIA, ASID and IDSA. Tricycle’s Tryk® digital surface samples will be on display at the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum’s 4th Trienniel, “Why Design Now” from May 14, 2010–January 9, 2011.

If he's not designing he's playing his vintage guitars and exploring New England with his wife and three children.
